For best results: Coneflowers require cold stratification to break dormancy and improve germination rates. Sow seeds in the fall to undergo cold stratification naturally during winter OR chill seeds in the fridge in a moist paper towel inside a sealed plastic bag for 4-6 weeks prior to sowing in the spring.
To plant: Sow seeds in moist soil up to 12-18 inches apart and ¼”- ½” deep. Coneflowers need sunlight to germinate, so ensure seeds aren’t buried. Continue to keep soil moist until germination (typ. 10-20 days). Full sun (6-8 hours/day) to part shade. Pinkish/purplish blooms mid-summer through mid-fall.
Once established, coneflowers are super hearty, spread quickly and their long- lasting flowers promote biodiversity by attracting a wide variety of pollinators, providing them with a food source year after year. And to think- all this without you even breaking a sweat (go you)!
